Second Line Through My Mind is a woven tapestry of ancestral healing alongside generational trauma, patterning and conditioning. It is a celebration after the grief of release. It is a love letter to the city that birthed and housed my ancestry and a tribute to the ways in which we celebrate through our hardest and darkest moments. Many women in the Duplessis/Marcelin family made a living out of sewing. Great aunts, grandmothers and great grandmothers. Bobbing and weaving. Maneuvering to join two things to make whole. Pieces take form in the sewing together of thoughts, emotions, feelings and desires. The body and mind are strung together through cathartic threads. Textures add depth and create stories. Garments create identity. Patterns serve as a guideline but can be altered to create something new.
